The literacy team will work with students to create a rich literate environment throughout our school community. We are excited about promoting such smart readers everywhere in our school. As you pass classrooms, you will see teachers reading aloud, students reading, and teachers and students deep in conversation about children's literature.
All students will take books home to read at night and on the weekends. We want the students at Jennings Junior High to really start "living like readers". We will continue to grow as readers this year.
The Junior High students participated in The Giver by Lois Lowry Book Club. Ten students participated in the club which met after school and culminated in a video conference with Lois Lowery and students across the U.S. & Canada. Students had to come up with a list of questions for the author. Three students from the
junior high were selected to ask Ms. Lowry their questions and represented the Jennings School District in a positive manner. We believe our students were the best of all the classes observed on the video conference. They took pride in themselves and it was evident by their behavior. The students worked hard on communication arts skills throughout the book club meetings, were highly engaged in the text, questioned the text, related the text to
other novels they have read, and all around dove deeper into the text. They worked hard but had a lot of fun doing it. They're ready for the next book club to start, asking what the next book will be and if it can be a mystery novel. The students at Jennings Junior High are eager to learn. We have some great readers who love to share their knowledge
of books. We are promoting life-long readers and that is a wonderful thing.
